📰Game Recap

Houston completed a dramatic comeback against Pittsburgh, overcoming a four-run deficit in the eighth inning with an explosive six-run rally to seal an 11-9 victory. The win marked an upset, as the Pirates had been favored in pregame markets.

The Astros took an early lead in the third, as Alvarez singled home Allen and Isaac Paredes followed with an RBI single, putting them up 2-0. Pittsburgh responded quickly in the fourth when Davis launched a grand slam, instantly flipping the score to 4-2 in their favor. The Astros trimmed the lead to 4-3 in the fifth on a Smith single, but the Pirates extended it again in the sixth with Triolo’s RBI single. Gonzales added a two-run homer and Garcia an RBI double in the seventh, pushing Pittsburgh’s advantage to 8-3. Paredes kept Houston hopes alive in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run homer, bringing the score to 8-5, but Gonzales doubled home another run for Pittsburgh in the eighth, making it 9-5 and seemingly putting the game out of reach.

Entering the bottom of the eighth trailing by four runs, the Astros mounted their largest scoring inning of the game. Vázquez’s double scored Allen, and Alvarez’s single brought home Vázquez, cutting the lead to two. Peña then scored on an error by Lowe (PIT) after Walker’s infield single, making it a one-run game. The score was tied at 9-9 when Cole scored on a Soto wild pitch during Paredes’ walk. Smith then delivered a crucial two-run triple, driving in Walker and Paredes to put Houston ahead 11-9. This eruption overshadowed a strong start by Pittsburgh’s Paul Skenes, who pitched 4.2 innings, allowing only one earned run while striking out seven.

Houston’s relentless offense, particularly its late-game power surge, proved too much for the favored Pirates, who couldn’t hold on to their commanding lead. The Astros moved to 64-62 with the win, while Pittsburgh dropped to 61-66.
