Game Recap
The Kansas City Royals, entering the matchup with a 46-65 record and favored to win, lived up to expectations in a high-scoring affair, defeating the St. Louis Cardinals (54-56) by a final score of 14-6. The Cardinals initially seized the momentum in the top of the first inning, scoring two runs. Wetherholt crossed the plate on a fielder's choice to shortstop, which also saw Herrera reach third due to a fielding error by Bobby Witt Jr. Herrera then scored on a sacrifice fly by Burleson, giving St. Louis an early 2-0 lead. However, Witt Jr. quickly atoned for his error, launching a 419-foot solo home run to left center in the bottom of the first, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
The game's turning point came swiftly in the bottom of the second inning, as the Royals exploded for six runs to decisively flip the script. Jensen doubled to left, bringing home Perez to tie the game, and Collins followed with another double to left, scoring Jensen and putting Kansas City ahead 3-2. The Royals extended their lead further when Massey reached first safely, allowing Collins to score on a fielding error by Cardinals left fielder VelΓ‘zquez. Thomas then doubled to left, plating Massey, before Witt Jr. collected his second hit of the night, an RBI single to right that scored Thomas. Finally, Marte capped off the massive inning with a double to right, driving in Witt Jr. and making it a 7-2 game.
St. Louis attempted to chip away at the lead in the fourth when Walker singled to shortstop, scoring Jordan, but the Royals had another powerful response. In the bottom of the fourth, Caglianone launched a 402-foot two-run homer to left center, scoring Tolbert. Loftin then added a two-run double to left, bringing home both Jensen and Marte, extending Kansas City's lead to a commanding 11-3. The Cardinals managed another run in the fifth on a FermΓn single that scored Winn, but the Royals continued their offensive onslaught.
Perez homered to left in the sixth inning, pushing the score to 12-4. The Cardinals made a final push in the seventh, with Winn scoring on a FermΓn groundout and Jordan crossing the plate on a PagΓ©s sacrifice fly, narrowing the gap to 12-6. Yet, Kansas City had the last word, scoring in both the seventh and eighth innings. Thomas singled to center to score Collins in the seventh, and Marte added the final run of the game in the eighth, scoring on a passed ball. Bobby Witt Jr. was a standout performer for the Royals, going 2-for-something (2-hit) with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored. On the mound, Noah Cameron provided a solid outing for Kansas City, pitching 5.0 innings and striking out six while surrendering three earned runs.
