St. Louis Cardinals vs Washington Nationals — Recap

📰Game Recap

The Washington Nationals defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 6-1, securing the victory with a decisive five-run surge in the eighth inning that transformed a closely contested game into a comfortable lead.

The contest remained a tight affair for most of the evening, with both teams managing only one run each through seven innings. Washington broke the deadlock in the decisive eighth, turning a tied game into a commanding advantage over the visitors.

The Nationals' offense erupted for five runs in the eighth inning, transforming the 1-1 tie into a significant lead. Cristhian Vaquero was instrumental in this late rally, driving in two runs to help spark the decisive outburst. On the mound, Riley Cornelio delivered a stellar relief appearance, shutting down the Cardinals for two scoreless innings and striking out three, ensuring St. Louis could not mount a counter-attack.

Ultimately, Washington's ability to capitalize with a late-game offensive explosion, coupled with a stifling bullpen performance, proved to be the difference. The Cardinals' bats were largely silenced, managing just a single run on the night. The Nationals now stand at 61-66, while the Cardinals drop to 64-63.
