Arizona Diamondbacks vs St. Louis Cardinals — Recap

📰Game Recap

The Arizona Diamondbacks staged a dramatic ninth-inning surge, scoring all four of their runs in the final frame to break a scoreless tie, then narrowly held off the St. Louis Cardinals for a 4-3 victory. Entering the contest as underdogs, Arizona completed the upset by navigating a tense bottom of the ninth, which saw the Cardinals mount a fierce three-run rally that ultimately fell short. The entirety of the game's scoring exploded in the ninth inning, transforming what had been a pitching duel into an instant classic.

For eight innings, the game remained a scoreless stalemate, a testament to the effectiveness of both pitching staffs. That changed dramatically in the top of the ninth when Arizona's offense finally broke through. Moreno scored the game's first run on an Arenado double to left field. Shortly after, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. delivered a crucial single to center, plating both Vargas and Arenado and extending the lead. Barrosa later crossed the plate on a passed ball by Crooks, padding the Diamondbacks' advantage to 4-0. Undeterred, the Cardinals launched a spirited comeback attempt in the bottom half of the inning, with Nootbaar scoring on a Burleson double to right. Fermín then touched home on Jordan’s sacrifice fly, followed by Crooks’ single to right field that brought Burleson in, pulling St. Louis within a single run.

The decisive sequence of the game undoubtedly unfolded in that explosive ninth inning. Arizona’s four-run eruption in the top half shifted the momentum, building an insurmountable lead just as the game appeared destined for extra innings. Gurriel Jr.'s two-run single was especially impactful, providing a critical cushion that proved essential. Prior to that, Eduardo Rodriguez’s masterful performance on the mound kept the Diamondbacks in contention, as he carved through the Cardinals lineup for 6.2 scoreless innings while striking out five. His ability to stifle St. Louis’s bats through the middle frames ensured that Arizona had a chance for their late offensive heroics, despite the Cardinals' last-ditch effort.

Ultimately, Arizona's ability to seize their opportunity in the ninth inning and secure a four-run lead, however fleeting, was the difference-maker. Their clutch hitting in the top of the frame, coupled with Rodriguez's standout pitching earlier, provided just enough to survive the Cardinals' spirited response. The Diamondbacks now hold a 63-55 record, while the Cardinals drop to 58-59.
