While the Cardinals were favored entering the game, their win was only cemented by a pivotal eighth inning that featured a crucial defensive error from Colorado.

St. Louis initially took control after a quick response to Colorado's first-inning run. After Goodman singled home McCarthy for the Rockies, the Cardinals answered back in the bottom half when Walker singled to score Wetherholt. They built on their lead in the third with a sacrifice fly from Crooks and an RBI double by Winn, pushing the score to 3-1. Herrera then singled to center, driving in Wetherholt for an insurance run and completing the three-run inning.

Ultimately, a costly defensive miscue in the eighth inning proved to be the Rockies' undoing, allowing the Cardinals to regain the lead they had lost just moments before. St. Louis improved their record to 59-59, while Colorado dropped to 46-72.
