The Detroit Tigers, entering play with a 51-57 record and favored against the 45-62 Oakland Athletics, wasted no time in asserting their advantage. After a strong start from pitcher Tarik Skubal, who would go on to strike out nine batters and allow just one earned run over five innings, the Tigers' offense ignited in the bottom of the first. Colt Keith launched a 427-foot home run to right-center field, bringing McGonigle home and giving Detroit an early 2-0 lead. The Athletics managed to get on the board in the top of the third when Bolte connected for a 411-foot homer to left, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

The game remained a tight one-run affair until the bottom of the sixth inning, which proved to be the turning point. Detroit broke the game open with a four-run explosion that fundamentally shifted the momentum. Malgeri started the scoring with a double to right, allowing McKinstry to cross the plate and push Torkelson to third. Vierling followed with another double to right, driving in both Malgeri and Torkelson and extending the Tigers' lead significantly. McGonigle capped the productive inning with a single to center, bringing Vierling home and making it 6-1 in favor of the Tigers.

Oakland attempted to mount a late comeback, scratching across another run in the top of the seventh when Langeliers singled to center, scoring Bolte. However, that was as close as the Athletics would get, as the Tigers successfully closed out the game. The final score reflected the favorites' triumph, with Detroit securing a 6-2 victory. Colt Keith's early two-run homer highlighted his top batting performance, finishing with a hit, two RBI, and a run scored, while Tarik Skubal's dominant outing on the mound was instrumental in keeping the Athletics at bay for much of the contest.
