The San Diego Padres secured a dramatic late-game victory over the Washington Nationals, coming from behind with a four-run rally in the eighth inning to take a narrow 5-4 win.

Washington initially built a three-run advantage, starting in the second inning when Morales launched a solo home run to left field. The Nationals added to their lead in the sixth when House doubled to center, scoring Abrams and Ortiz. San Diego finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh on Merrill's sacrifice fly, bringing home Manny Machado, but Washington's Chaparro responded in the top of the eighth with a solo shot of his own, extending the lead to 4-1.

However, the Padres' offense erupted in the bottom of the eighth, turning the tide of the game. Hays started the rally with a sacrifice fly that scored Bogaerts. Later in the inning, Manny Machado delivered a clutch single to center, driving in Fermin and Tatis Jr. to knot the score at four runs apiece. The comeback culminated when Campusano singled to right, pushing Machado across the plate for the go-ahead run. Machado was a key figure throughout, recording two hits, two RBI, and scoring twice, while starting pitcher Casey Mize had a respectable outing with 5.2 innings pitched and seven strikeouts.

Despite holding a comfortable lead into the late innings, the Nationals were unable to contain the Padres' decisive eighth-inning outburst, ultimately falling short in a game where the favored Padres lived up to expectations. This hard-fought victory improved San Diego's record to 77-68, while Washington's dropped to 67-80.
