Baltimore Orioles vs Detroit Tigers — Recap

📰Game Recap

The Baltimore Orioles, entering Saturday's contest as the road underdog with a 52-56 record, pulled off a stunning comeback against the favored Detroit Tigers (51-57) in a wild 10-9 victory. Detroit wasted no time getting on the board, plating three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Javier Báez singled home Spencer Torkelson for the first run, and an ensuing throwing error allowed Jake Vierling to score. Báez then crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from McGonigle, giving the Tigers an early 3-0 lead. Tarik Skubal was impressive on the mound for Detroit, holding the Orioles in check through the early frames.

The Tigers continued to build on their advantage, scoring two more in the fifth when Báez again singled home a run, this time plating Zack McKinstry, and then scored himself on a sacrifice fly by Lee, making it 5-0. McKinstry further extended Detroit's comfortable lead in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run double, bringing home Riley Greene and Valencia to push the score to 7-0. The Tigers appeared to be cruising, with Skubal putting together a strong outing of 6.2 innings and six strikeouts, allowing just three earned runs.

However, the Orioles ignited their furious comeback in the top of the seventh inning, which proved to be the game's turning point. Taveras singled to score Henderson, getting Baltimore on the board. Jackson Holliday then delivered a clutch single to bring home Mayo and Taveras, cutting the deficit to 7-3. The rally continued as Ward singled to score Jackson and Holliday, suddenly making it a two-run game at 7-5. Baltimore wasn't done, completing the full comeback in the top of the eighth when Mayo tripled to left field, scoring Henderson and Beavers to tie the game at 7-7 and send it into extra innings.

The drama intensified in the 11th inning. Baltimore took their first lead of the game when Pozo hit a sacrifice fly to score Encarnacion-Strand, followed by Holliday's single that brought home Mayo, putting the Orioles up 9-7. But Spencer Torkelson, who had a strong night with two hits including a home run and two RBIs, answered immediately for Detroit in the bottom half with a two-run blast to left field, scoring Valencia and tying the game once more at 9-9. The Orioles, however, had the final say in the 12th, as Cowser singled to center field, scoring Ward to secure a 10-9 lead that would stand, completing the remarkable upset victory for Baltimore.
