Baltimore established an early lead and, despite a late rally from Oakland, ultimately secured a victory, helped by an insurance run in the final inning. The Orioles built a four-run advantage before the Athletics clawed their way back, narrowing the deficit to just one run in the eighth.

The Orioles offense began to chip away in the third inning when Leody Taveras hit a ground rule double, bringing Mayo home. Anthony Cowser then extended the lead with a solo home run to center in the fifth. Taveras continued his impactful day in the top of the sixth, doubling to left field and scoring both Mayo and Beavers, pushing Baltimore's lead to 4-0. The Athletics responded in the bottom of the sixth, as Butler walked with the bases loaded, allowing Heim to score. Walton was then hit by a pitch, scoring McNeil and bringing Oakland within two runs.

Oakland's rally continued into the eighth inning when Cortes singled to right, scoring Walton and further trimming the Orioles' advantage to a single run. However, Baltimore managed to quell the comeback bid and add crucial separation in the top of the ninth. Cowser crossed the plate on a passed ball by Heim, pushing the lead back to two runs and taking some pressure off the Orioles' bullpen. Jack Perkins delivered a strong outing, allowing just one earned run over five innings while striking out five, but the Orioles' early run production proved difficult to overcome.

Ultimately, the Orioles' ability to capitalize on early opportunities and later secure a vital insurance run proved decisive, enabling them to weather Oakland's late-game surge. This victory moves Baltimore's record to 67-69, while Oakland falls to 53-83.
