Chicago Cubs vs St. Louis Cardinals — Recap

📰Game Recap

The Chicago Cubs overcame an early deficit to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-1, steadily building their lead after the fourth inning.

St. Louis initially broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning when Burleson singled to right, allowing Wetherholt to score. Chicago quickly answered in the top of the fifth, with Busch's single to center bringing home Pete Crow-Armstrong. The Cubs then took the lead in the sixth as Hoerner singled home Amaya, and Busch followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Swanson, extending the lead to 3-1.

Ben Brown's dominant outing played a crucial role, allowing only one earned run and striking out six over 7.0 innings, effectively neutralizing the Cardinals' bats after their initial score. This strong pitching performance gave Chicago's offense the opportunity to gradually pull away. Pete Crow-Armstrong was a consistent force at the plate, collecting four hits, including a solo home run in the eighth inning that pushed the score to 4-1. He later added an RBI single in the ninth, scoring Suzuki, after Happ had crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Pushard to give the Cubs insurance runs in the final frame.

Ultimately, the Cubs prevailed due to a combination of stellar starting pitching that kept the Cardinals at bay and a relentless offensive attack, spearheaded by Crow-Armstrong, that scored in five different innings to seal the victory. The Chicago Cubs now stand at 73-53, while the St. Louis Cardinals fall to 64-62.
