Game Recap
The Cleveland Guardians, entering play with a 54-53 record, edged out the Minnesota Twins (53-54) in a 5-2 road victory, extending their slim lead in a tightly contested division race. True to their pregame billing as favorites, Cleveland set the tone early, breaking the scoreless tie in the second inning. Josรฉ Arias launched a 442-foot solo home run to center field, giving the Guardians an initial 1-0 advantage.
The Twins, however, wouldn't be held down for long. In the bottom of the fifth, they manufactured a run when Royce Lewis, who was a bright spot for Minnesota's offense throughout the night, singled and later scored on a single to right by Will Gray, knotting the game at 1-1. But Cleveland quickly snatched back the momentum. In the top of the sixth, John DeLauter connected for a 394-foot home run to right, putting the Guardians back on top, 2-1. They further extended their lead in the seventh when Brayan Rocchio doubled to left, driving home Kwan and Bailey to make it 4-1.
Despite Gavin Williams' dominant outing for Cleveland, where he fanned 11 batters and allowed just two earned runs over seven innings, the Twins showed signs of life in the bottom of the seventh. Royce Lewis continued his strong performance, delivering a 389-foot solo blast to left field, cutting the deficit to 4-2. Yet, Cleveland responded with a crucial insurance run in the top of the ninth, as David Bailey homered to right, pushing the final score to 5-2. Lewis ended the game with two hits, including his home run, one RBI, and two runs scored, but it wasn't enough to overcome Williams' stellar pitching and Cleveland's timely power hitting.
