πŸ“°Game Recap

The St. Louis Cardinals held off a persistent Pittsburgh Pirates surge to secure a narrow 5-4 victory, establishing an early four-run lead that ultimately proved insurmountable despite Pittsburgh's late-game efforts. The Cardinals managed to keep the Pirates at bay, even as Pittsburgh chipped away at the deficit over three consecutive innings in the latter half of the contest.

St. Louis initiated the scoring in the third inning when Wetherholt doubled to left field, bringing home UrΓas. Two innings later, Alec Burleson extended the lead with a 411-foot two-run home run to left center, also scoring Herrera. Pittsburgh responded immediately in the bottom of the fifth with Horwitz's 397-foot solo shot to center field, cutting the deficit. The Cardinals then padded their advantage further in the seventh, first when Herrera reached on an infield single that scored Scott II, followed by Walker's single that drove in Herrera.

The Cardinals' three-run surge across the fifth and seventh innings proved crucial in building the buffer they needed to withstand the Pirates' rally. Burleson's fifth-inning blast was a significant blow, while the two-run seventh gave them a 5-1 cushion. Pittsburgh began to chip away in the bottom of the seventh with Yorke's two-run single, scoring Bart and Griffin. An inning later, Cruz's groundout brought home Gonzales, narrowing the deficit to a single run. However, the early lead, solidified by key hits from Burleson and Walker, ultimately sustained St. Louis. Andre Pallante’s strong six-inning start, allowing only one earned run and striking out six, also played a pivotal role in establishing that initial control.

Ultimately, the Cardinals' ability to score in bursts and create separation early in the game was enough to withstand the Pirates' persistent late-game rally attempts. Their strong offensive output in critical moments, combined with solid starting pitching, allowed them to maintain the lead throughout the entire contest. The St. Louis Cardinals now stand at 65-61, while the Pittsburgh Pirates fall to 61-66.
