St. Louis Cardinals vs San Diego Padres — Recap

📰Game Recap

The St. Louis Cardinals narrowly defeated the San Diego Padres in a tight 2-1 contest, staging a comeback after an early deficit. St. Louis relied on timely hitting to chip away at the Padres' initial lead before securing the go-ahead run in the later innings of a classic pitchers' duel.

San Diego was the first to strike, with Xander Bogaerts singling to right in the bottom of the first inning, which allowed Manny Machado to score and gave the Padres a 1-0 advantage. The game then settled into a low-scoring affair until the top of the fourth, when Alec Burleson evened the score for the Cardinals with a 378-foot solo home run to right field.

The decisive blow came in the top of the seventh inning. With the game still tied, Paul Goldschmidt walked to lead off the inning, followed by a fielder's choice. Later in the frame, Masyn Winn tripled to right field, scoring Nolan Walker and putting the Cardinals ahead for the first time. Despite a strong performance from Padres starter Michael King, who pitched six innings and recorded six strikeouts while allowing just one earned run, San Diego's offense could not respond to St. Louis's rally.

Ultimately, the Cardinals' ability to generate crucial runs through a solo home run and a go-ahead triple proved the difference in a game where offense was at a premium. St. Louis now holds a 66-62 record, while the Padres fall to 68-60.
