Game Recap
Cleveland secured a victory by establishing an early lead and extending it in crucial later innings, successfully fending off a late Kansas City rally. The Guardians initiated the scoring with three runs in the opening frame and added three more in the seventh, creating a significant cushion that the Royals could not fully erase despite scoring in the final innings.
The Guardians wasted no time, getting on the scoreboard in the top of the first when Manzardo doubled, driving in Kwan and RamΓrez. Schneemann then singled to bring Manzardo home, establishing a 3-0 lead. Halpin extended the advantage in the third with an RBI single, pushing the score to 4-0. Kansas City finally broke through in the fifth with Garciaβs RBI single, cutting the deficit to three runs, before Cleveland added another run in the sixth on a passed ball.
The Guardians' consistent ability to add runs proved decisive, particularly Bo Naylor's three-run homer in the seventh inning. This blast, which scored Bazzana and Rocchio, widened Clevelandβs lead to 8-2 just as the Royals were showing signs of life. While Witt Jr. and Pasquantino responded with back-to-back solo home runs in the bottom half of the seventh, and Thomas added a sacrifice fly in the eighth, these efforts only chipped away at the substantial lead Cleveland had built. Slade Cecconi's solid 5.1 innings, allowing just two earned runs, helped keep the Royals at bay early on, allowing the Guardians' offense to dictate the pace.
Ultimately, Clevelandβs sustained offensive pressure, highlighted by significant multi-run innings, allowed them to control the game from start to finish and prevent Kansas City from mounting a full comeback. The Guardians improved their record to 61-65, while the Royals fell to 51-75.
