Arizona Diamondbacks vs Boston Red Sox β€” Recap

August 18, 2026  Β· Fenway Park  Β· View Preview

πŸ“°Game Recap

The Boston Red Sox solidified their season standing with a victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, leveraging a persistent offensive attack that continually built upon their lead. Boston’s bats proved resilient, shaking off Arizona’s largest scoring outburst to steadily pull away.

Boston quickly established an early advantage, pushing three runs across the plate in the bottom of the first inning. Rutschman delivered a two-run single that brought home Rafaela and Sogard, while Abreu scored on a sacrifice fly from Durbin. The Diamondbacks, however, mounted a formidable response in the third. Gabriel Moreno connected for a 428-foot grand slam to center field, driving in Waldschmidt, Vargas, and Carroll, giving Arizona a sudden 4-3 lead.

The Red Sox immediately countered in the bottom of the third, reclaiming momentum and the lead. Rutschman launched a 401-foot solo home run to right field, tying the game at four apiece. The go-ahead run scored shortly after when Durbin crossed the plate on a wild pitch thrown by Arizona's Kelly. Boston continued to extend its lead through the middle and late innings; Monasterio singled home Contreras in the fifth, Gasper added a 414-foot solo homer in the sixth, and Contreras drove in Sogard on an infield single later that inning. Gasper capped the scoring with an RBI single in the seventh.

Despite surrendering all four Diamondbacks runs, including the grand slam, over 5.1 innings, starting pitcher Ranger Suarez was backed by an offense that consistently provided run support. The Red Sox's ability to respond decisively after Arizona’s offensive surge, particularly their immediate reclamation of the lead in the third inning, proved to be the difference. Boston improves to a 68-58 record, while Arizona drops to 66-61.
