Game Recap
Milwaukee quickly established an early lead against Washington, then held on to secure a 4-1 victory. An opportunistic first inning gave the Brewers all the offense they needed, and a late insurance run sealed the win.
The Brewers wasted no time in the top of the first. Contreras scored the game's first run when Rengifo reached on a fielding error by Nationals third baseman House. Moments later, Brandon Lockridge delivered a key two-run single to left field, driving in Bauers and SΓ‘nchez to stake Milwaukee to a 3-0 advantage. Washington answered in the fourth inning as Abrams singled to right, allowing Mead to cross the plate. The score remained 3-1 until the eighth, when Ortiz grounded out to second, bringing home Hamilton for an additional Milwaukee run.
The decisive moment of the contest came in the opening frame. Milwaukee's three-run surge, initiated by the Nationals' defensive miscue and solidified by Lockridge's clutch hit, provided a cushion that proved insurmountable. Despite the early damage, Washington pitcher Foster Griffin delivered a superb performance, tossing six scoreless innings. His extended outing kept the Nationals within striking distance, stifling the Brewers' bats after the initial outburst.
Ultimately, the Brewers' ability to capitalize on early opportunities and build an insurmountable lead propelled them to victory. The Nationals' offense, however, could not generate enough consistent pressure to overcome the deficit. Following this result, Milwaukee improves its record to 78-48, while Washington now stands at 60-67.
