Game Recap
The Kansas City Royals mounted a late comeback to defeat the Seattle Mariners in extra innings, snatching a victory despite a stellar outing from Mariners pitcher Emerson Hancock. Kansas City scratched across the tying run in the ninth inning and plated the go-ahead run in the tenth to complete the comeback.
Seattle initially took the lead in the first inning when Naylor singled home RodrΓguez. Kansas City responded in the third, as Maikel Garcia doubled to left field to score Isbel, knotting the game at one. The Mariners regained their advantage in the fifth, with Rivas scoring on a wild pitch from Royals reliever Lugo, pushing Seattle ahead 2-1. This slender lead held for the home team through the late innings, thanks to a dominant performance on the mound.
Hancockβs masterful performance, which included 14 strikeouts over seven strong innings, kept the Royals offense largely at bay, allowing only one earned run. Despite this, the Mariners bullpen could not close it out. In the ninth, with Seattle still holding a one-run lead, Kansas City capitalized on a critical fielding error. Caglianone singled to center, allowing Thomas to score on a fielding error by center fielder RodrΓguez, tying the game at two and forcing extra innings.
The Royals sealed their improbable victory in the top of the tenth inning when Garcia delivered a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing Massey home for the decisive run. Kansas City prevailed by capitalizing on Seattleβs late-game miscues, turning a dominant pitching performance by Hancock into a bitter loss for the Mariners. The comeback win moved Kansas City's record to 52-74, while Seattle fell to 59-67.
