Game Recap
The Seattle Mariners rallied repeatedly from early deficits and ultimately claimed a dramatic 5-4 walk-off victory over the Oakland Athletics, securing the win with a ninth-inning run. The Mariners consistently chipped away at Oakland’s leads throughout the game, demonstrating a persistent offense that culminated in the decisive play. Despite the Athletics finding ways to regain momentum, Seattle’s timely hitting proved too much to overcome.
Oakland initially took a two-run lead in the first inning, with Soderstrom’s sacrifice fly and McNeil’s single, which allowed Langeliers to score on an error. Seattle quickly responded, however, as Arozarena’s sacrifice fly cut the lead to 2-1. In the third, Wilson doubled to extend Oakland’s advantage, but Cal Raleigh answered for Seattle with a solo home run, making it 3-2. The Mariners then tied the game in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Refsnyder, setting the stage for a tense finish.
Seattle finally took its first lead in the seventh inning when Rodríguez grounded out, allowing Crawford to cross the plate. Just when it seemed the Athletics were done, Kurtz launched a 438-foot solo home run to center field in the top of the ninth, tying the game once more. However, the Mariners refused to be denied. In the bottom of the ninth, with a runner on second, Naylor delivered a clutch single to left field, bringing Raleigh home for the walk-off win.
The Mariners’ ability to string together key hits and respond to every Oakland scoring play ultimately decided the outcome. Cal Raleigh was a significant factor in Seattle’s offensive effort, collecting three hits, including a home run, and scoring twice. Their relentless pressure at the plate allowed them to snatch victory from a tightly contested game. Seattle improved to 60-66, while Oakland fell to 49-76.
