Tampa Bay Rays vs St. Louis Cardinals — Recap

📰Game Recap

St. Louis defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 6-5, surviving a dramatic ninth-inning surge after building an early advantage. The Cardinals' offense, paced by JJ Wetherholt, supported a dominant start from Michael McGreevy, who held the high-powered Rays lineup scoreless through six innings.

McGreevy carved through Tampa Bay's order, allowing the Cardinals to steadily accrue runs and establish a comfortable lead. Wetherholt contributed significantly to St. Louis's scoring efforts, driving in two runs and scoring one himself. Entering the final frame, the Cardinals appeared to be cruising toward a straightforward victory.

However, the Rays exploded for four runs in the top of the ninth, turning what had been a multi-run cushion into a precarious one-run lead. This offensive burst, the largest scoring inning of the game for either side, brought the potential tying run to the plate. Despite the sudden pressure, the Cardinals' bullpen managed to record the final out, preserving McGreevy's stellar effort and the early offensive production.

Ultimately, St. Louis's ability to capitalize on early opportunities and withstand a furious late-game rally proved just enough to secure the win. The Cardinals improved their record to 65-61, while the Rays moved to 74-50.
