Game Recap
The Chicago Cubs pulled away in the late innings, scoring six unanswered runs after the game was tied through six frames, to defeat the Chicago White Sox. A decisive four-run outburst in the eighth inning solidified their lead, giving them a comfortable margin in the crosstown rivalry.
Ian Happ opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI single, but the White Sox quickly answered when Montgomery launched a solo home run to right center in the second. The Cubs built a lead in the middle innings, adding a run in the fourth on Carson Kelly's single and two more in the fifth with an RBI double from Busch and another from Suzuki. Yet, the White Sox responded in the bottom of the fifth, cutting the deficit to one with an RBI groundout from Peters and a double from Romo. Vargas then tied the contest at four runs apiece with a solo blast in the sixth.
After the White Sox had erased a three-run deficit to tie the game, the Cubs began to reassert control in the seventh. Kelly once again delivered with an infield single that scored Bregman, followed by Crow-Armstrong's single to right that brought home Suzuki, extending the lead to 6-4. The pivotal moment arrived in the eighth inning as the Cubs exploded for four runs. Swanson scored on a wild pitch, and the rally continued when Shaw drew a walk that pushed across Busch. Kelly then capped his strong performance with a ground rule double that plated both Bregman and Suzuki, widening the gap to six runs.
The Cubs' ability to consistently manufacture runs and deliver timely hits, particularly in their late-game rally, allowed them to overcome the White Sox's resilient comeback efforts. They improved their record to 73-53, while the White Sox now stand at 65-59.
