Kansas City Royals vs St. Louis Cardinals — Recap

📰Game Recap

The St. Louis Cardinals repeatedly fought back to defeat the Kansas City Royals 5-4 in 11 innings on Wednesday, securing a dramatic walk-off victory after twice falling behind in extra frames. A resilient effort from the Cardinals offense saw them answer every challenge, culminating in the deciding run after a back-and-forth affair that saw multiple lead changes.

Kansas City initially seized control in the fourth inning. Jensen doubled home Pasquantino, and Perez scored on a sacrifice fly from Collins, giving the Royals a 2-0 advantage. Not to be outdone, the Cardinals immediately countered in the bottom half when Jordan Walker launched a two-run homer to center, tying the game. St. Louis then took its first lead in the fifth inning on a solo shot from Pagés before Collins’ groundout in the sixth inning once again pulled Kansas City even, setting the stage for late-game drama.

The contest remained deadlocked at three runs apiece through nine innings, pushing it to extras. The Royals appeared to take control in the tenth when Witt Jr. doubled to score Garcia, putting them up 4-3. However, the Cardinals refused to yield, tying the game yet again on Burleson’s single in the bottom of the tenth. Their persistent rally continued into the eleventh when Pozo delivered the game-winning single, driving in Church for the walk-off victory. Walker’s three-hit performance, including his crucial fourth-inning homer, proved instrumental in keeping St. Louis in contention early on, while Kansas City starter Michael Wacha provided a solid six innings but was ultimately overshadowed by the late-inning heroics.

Ultimately, the Cardinals' repeated ability to respond to Kansas City's scoring, particularly in the pressure-packed extra innings, defined the outcome of the game. Their relentless offensive resilience earned them the hard-fought win. St. Louis now stands at 65-61, while Kansas City falls to 51-75.
