The Chicago Cubs, entering the contest as the favored team with a 60-46 record, ultimately lived up to expectations, securing a 5-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds (49-56) in a game that saw multiple lead changes. The Reds, however, wasted no time in establishing an early advantage, breaking the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning. Lowe launched a 381-foot home run to right field, quickly followed by Suárez, who homered 370 feet to right center, giving Cincinnati a 2-0 lead.

The Cubs began their rally in the top of the fifth when Suzuki singled to center, driving in Amaya and cutting the deficit to 2-1. Chicago then surged ahead in a eventful top of the sixth. Kelly evened the score with a 410-foot solo blast to center, and moments later, Happ doubled to left, bringing Busch home to put the Cubs up 3-2. However, Cincinnati wasted no time in responding, as Bleday connected for a 379-foot home run to right in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game once more at 3-3.

The back-and-forth affair was finally decided in the top of the seventh inning when Alex Bregman delivered the decisive blow. Bregman, who finished as the Cubs' top batting performer with his lone hit being a home run and two RBI, launched a 354-foot shot to left field, scoring Suzuki and putting Chicago ahead 5-3. The Cubs held onto this advantage to close out the game. For the Reds, starter Nick Lodolo delivered a solid performance despite the loss, pitching 5.0 innings and striking out four while surrendering just two earned runs.
