The Chicago Cubs, entering the matchup as the favored team, wasted no time asserting their dominance over the St. Louis Cardinals, securing a decisive 10-2 victory to improve their record to 60-46. The tone was set early in the first inning when Happ's double brought home both Bregman and Seiya Suzuki, giving the Cubs a quick 2-0 lead. This early advantage was merely a prelude to a much larger surge that would define the contest and solidify the Cubs' position.

What began as a promising start quickly turned into a rout in the second inning, which served as the game's undeniable turning point. The Cubs exploded for five runs, starting with Crow-Armstrong's sacrifice fly that scored Conforto. Seiya Suzuki then doubled to left, bringing Kelly home, before Busch singled to right to plate Suzuki himself. Capping off the massive frame, Hoerner delivered a single that scored both Bregman and Busch, stretching the lead to a commanding 7-0 and putting the game firmly out of reach for the 53-53 Cardinals.

While the Cardinals managed to get on the board in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly from Church, scoring Burleson, the Cubs never truly ceded control. Cubs starter Colin Rea delivered a strong performance, allowing only 1 earned run and striking out two batters over 6.0 innings of work, effectively stifling any St. Louis comeback attempts. The Cubs added another run in the fifth when Ramirez reached on an infield single, allowing Hoerner to cross the plate and push the score to 8-1.

The Cubs continued to pile on in the later innings, further burying the Cardinals. Seiya Suzuki, who had an outstanding day at the plate with 3 hits, 2 RBI, and 2 runs scored, singled to center in the eighth, driving in Ramirez for the Cubs' ninth run. In the ninth, Kelly singled to center, scoring Happ and bringing the Cubs' total to double digits. The Cardinals managed a final run in the bottom of the ninth on Winn's ground rule double, which scored Nootbaar, but it was far too little, too late as the Cubs closed out the 10-2 triumph.
