The San Diego Padres, entering the contest as the favored team against the struggling Colorado Rockies, lived up to their pregame billing with a hard-fought 8-7 victory. However, the win was far from a foregone conclusion, as the Rockies proved to be a resilient opponent, pushing the game to the brink. The Padres initially looked in control, taking a 2-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a Campusano double that scored Sheets, followed by an RBI single from Tatis Jr. that brought home Bogaerts.

The Rockies quickly turned the tide in what would become the game's designated turning point. The third inning saw Colorado explode for four runs, starting with a solo home run by Castro. McCarthy then singled in Julien to tie the game before Mickey Moniak launched a 406-foot home run to right, also scoring McCarthy and giving the Rockies a surprising 4-2 lead. Moniak's performance, which included two hits, a home run, and three RBIs, would ultimately be the top batting display of the night, while Padres pitcher Michael King settled in to deliver six innings with six strikeouts despite surrendering four earned runs.

The Padres chipped away at the deficit, with Machado singling in Tatis Jr. in the fifth to make it 4-3, then Tatis Jr. again delivering an RBI single in the sixth to plate Sheets, tying the game at 4-4. Undeterred, the Rockies regained the lead in the seventh, first on a Tovar double that scored Castro, then Moniak continued his stellar night with a double of his own, bringing Tovar home for a 6-4 advantage. True to the back-and-forth nature of the game, San Diego immediately responded in the bottom of the seventh with Merrill's RBI single, followed by an error that allowed France to score, once again knotting the score at 6-6.

The seesaw battle continued into the late innings. The Rockies briefly took a 7-6 lead in the eighth when Tovar drew a walk with the bases loaded, forcing home Carrigg. But the Padres, not to be outdone, capitalized on another defensive miscue in the bottom of the eighth, as Machado singled and Cronenworth scored on a fielding error by right fielder McCarthy, tying the game at 7-7. Ultimately, the Padres secured the walk-off victory in the ninth inning, with Bogaerts hitting a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Merrill to cross home plate and seal the 8-7 win for the favored San Diego squad.
