Game Recap
The Miami Marlins, entering the contest with a 55-54 record and as pregame underdogs against the 45-62 Oakland Athletics, delivered a stunning upset victory propelled by an explosive start. The turning point arrived immediately in the top of the first inning, as Miami erupted for six runs. The scoring began when Edwards walked, bringing Hicks home. Stowers then scored on a passed ball, and shortly after, HernΓ‘ndez blasted a 414-foot homer to center, scoring Lopez and Edwards for a 5-0 lead. Marsee capped the monumental inning with a 381-foot solo shot to right, putting the Marlins firmly in control at 6-0.
Miami extended their lead in the second inning when Edwards hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Hicks to score and making it 7-0. However, the Athletics began to chip away at the deficit. In the bottom of the third, Kurtz launched a 457-foot home run to center, bringing Williams home and cutting the score to 7-2. Oakland continued their comeback bid in the fourth, as McNeil doubled to center, scoring Bolte, Kuroda-Grauer, and Cortes, dramatically narrowing the gap to 7-5 and suddenly making it a two-run game.
Just as Oakland threatened to complete the comeback, the Marlins' offense, led by Kyle Stowers, rekindled its spark. Stowers hit a solo home run to right in the sixth inning, pushing Miamiβs lead to 8-5 and providing some much-needed breathing room. He wasn't finished, adding a second homer, a 388-foot two-run shot to right-center in the eighth that also scored Hicks, effectively breaking the game open at 10-5. Caissie then provided further insurance in the ninth with a 390-foot two-run homer to left, scoring Ruiz and solidifying the Marlins' dominant 12-5 victory. Contributing to the Marlins' ability to maintain their lead through the A's rally was Lake Bachar, who delivered a stellar relief performance, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings and striking out one.
