Game Recap
The Boston Red Sox (55-51) continued to add to the struggles of the Los Angeles Angels (42-66) on Tuesday night, securing a 5-2 victory driven by an early offensive surge. The Red Sox opened the scoring in the top of the second inning when Jarren Duran's sacrifice fly to left field brought home Romy GonzΓ‘lez, giving Boston a 1-0 lead.
The decisive blow came in the very next inning, as the Red Sox truly broke the game open with a three-run third inning, identified as the turning point of the contest. Romy GonzΓ‘lez, who had a standout performance at the plate, delivered a crucial single to right field that scored both Rafael Abreu and Jarren Contreras, extending Boston's advantage to 3-0. The inning wasn't over there; a sacrifice bunt by Duran was misplayed by first baseman Nolan Schanuel, allowing Jake Durbin to score and pushing the Red Sox's lead to 4-0.
Boston continued to build on its momentum in the top of the fifth inning when Durbin launched a 358-foot solo home run to left, further solidifying the Red Sox's lead at 5-0. Angels starter Reid Detmers struggled to contain the Red Sox offense, surrendering all five earned runs over his 5.0 innings on the mound, while collecting five strikeouts.
The Angels finally managed to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth inning. Ramon Siri broke the shutout with a 408-foot solo homer to right center, and Zach Neto followed up with a single that scored Luis Lowe, bringing the Angels within three runs at 5-2. However, the Red Sox bullpen held firm, denying any further comeback attempt. Romy GonzΓ‘lez led the Red Sox offense with an impressive three-hit performance, driving in two runs and scoring once, as Boston secured the road win.
