The Miami Marlins, entering the game with a 56-55 record, pulled off an upset against the favored Oakland Athletics (45-65) with a dramatic 9-8 victory. Miami wasted no time establishing control, with Hernández launching a 437-foot homer in the first inning to put them on the board. The offense continued to click in the second, as Lopez’s ground rule double scored Marsee, followed by Hicks’ sacrifice fly to bring in Navarreto, extending the lead to 3-0. Jiménez then added a two-run, 405-foot blast in the third, and Lopez followed with another sacrifice fly, pushing the Marlins' advantage to 6-0.

Miami’s dominant start was further bolstered by the stellar performance of starting pitcher Eury Perez, who carved through the Athletics' lineup for seven shutout innings, racking up eight strikeouts and allowing no earned runs. The Marlins offense wasn't done for him, as Lopez hit a 420-foot solo homer in the sixth, and Hernández followed suit with a 422-foot shot, giving Miami a commanding 8-0 lead and seemingly putting the game out of reach.

However, the game took a dramatic turn in the bottom of the eighth, which proved to be the pivotal turning point. The Athletics finally broke their silence when Cortes doubled to right, scoring Butler. The momentum truly shifted when Jonah Heim stepped to the plate and blasted a 371-foot home run to right, clearing the bases and scoring Kuroda-Grauer, Cortes, and Muncy. This five-run outburst in the eighth inning suddenly brought Oakland back into contention, narrowing the deficit to 8-5. Heim proved to be Oakland's offensive catalyst throughout the night, finishing with two hits, including his crucial home run, and an impressive six RBI.

Despite the late surge by Oakland, Miami managed to tack on an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Hicks grounded out, allowing Lopez to score. But the Athletics weren't ready to concede. In the bottom of the ninth, Gelof scored on a passed ball, and Jonah Heim once again delivered, singling to center to drive in Butler and Muncy, bringing the score to a nail-biting 9-8. Ultimately, the Marlins held on to secure the upset victory, marking a hard-fought win on the road.
