πŸ“°Game Recap

The St. Louis Cardinals, entering the night with a 53-52 record, pulled off an upset against the favored Arizona Diamondbacks (55-51) on Tuesday, securing a dramatic 5-4 victory. St. Louis wasted no time establishing an early lead, as in the top of the first inning, Winn singled to center, bringing home both Burleson and Herrera to put the Cardinals up 2-0 and set the tone for the visitors.

Arizona began to chip away at the deficit, with Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hitting a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second to score Moreno, making it a 2-1 game. The Diamondbacks then evened the score in the very next inning when Tawa launched a 381-foot solo home run to left field, knotting the game at 2-2. The Cardinals, however, quickly reclaimed their lead in the top of the fifth inning, courtesy of Wetherholt's 402-foot solo blast to right center. St. Louis starting pitcher Michael McGreevy turned in a strong performance, allowing only one earned run over 6.1 innings while striking out five, keeping the Diamondbacks' offense largely at bay through the middle innings.

The late innings brought heightened drama, setting the stage for a back-and-forth battle. In the top of the eighth, Winn extended St. Louis's lead with another sacrifice fly, this time to left, scoring Burleson and pushing the score to 4-2. But the Diamondbacks refused to surrender, responding immediately in the bottom of the eighth when Corbin Carroll, who was Arizona's top offensive performer with a home run and two RBI, blasted a 356-foot two-run homer to right field that scored Perdomo, tying the game once again at 4-4. The deadlock was broken in the top of the ninth when Herrera hit a sacrifice fly to left, allowing FermΓn to cross the plate with what proved to be the game-winning run, securing the 5-4 upset for the Cardinals.
