Game Recap
The Cleveland Guardians, entering play with a 56-54 record and facing the 55-54 Miami Marlins as slight underdogs, wasted no time in asserting their presence on the road. Brayan Rocchio ignited the offense in the top of the first inning, singling to right field to score Bazzana and advance to second base. Rocchio then came around to score himself moments later on a single to left by Manzardo, giving the Guardians an early 2-0 lead and setting the tone for an upset victory.
Miami managed to cut into the lead in the bottom of the third inning when Edwards singled to left, bringing home HernΓ‘ndez to make it a 2-1 game. However, Guardians starter Joey Cantillo delivered a stellar performance, stifling the Marlins' bats for much of his outing. Cantillo pitched 5.0 strong innings, allowing just one earned run while striking out an impressive nine batters. Rocchio continued his exceptional night in the top of the fifth, launching a 398-foot solo home run to right field, pushing Cleveland's lead back to two runs at 3-1.
The Guardians padded their lead further in the late innings, starting in the top of the seventh when Watson reached on an infield single to shortstop, allowing Bazzana to score and extending the lead to 4-1. They added even more insurance in the ninth with a powerful 435-foot home run to right by DeLauter, making it 5-1. While Bryan Conine answered with a 442-foot solo shot to right center for the Marlins in the bottom of the ninth, it was too little, too late. The Guardians held on for a 5-2 victory, securing a critical road win and completing the upset against the favored Marlins.
