πŸ“°Game Recap

The favored New York Yankees, entering the contest at 60-46, lived up to their billing in a hard-fought 5-3 victory over the Washington Nationals (54-53). The Nationals, however, delivered the first punch, thrilling the home crowd early when James Wood launched a 434-foot solo home run to center in the bottom of the first inning, giving Washington an immediate 1-0 lead. Nationals starter Cade Cavalli was instrumental in holding that advantage, pitching 6.0 innings while striking out five and allowing just two earned runs, keeping his team in prime position.

The Yankees finally broke through in the top of the fifth inning, orchestrating a two-run rally to claim their first lead. Jazz Chisholm Jr. singled to right, bringing home Bellinger to tie the game at 1-1. Following that, Wells singled to right, scoring Chisholm Jr. to put New York ahead 2-1. Washington quickly answered in the bottom of the sixth as Mead connected for a 409-foot home run to center, knotting the score once again at 2-2. The see-saw battle continued into the seventh, with the Nationals reclaiming the lead on an error by second baseman Chisholm Jr., allowing NuΓ±ez to score and putting Washington up 3-2.

However, the Yankees would not be denied. In the top of the eighth inning, Rice delivered a clutch triple to left field, driving in both Schuemann and Grisham to turn the tide and give New York a 4-3 advantage. An insurance run came in the ninth when Caballero hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Bellinger and extending the lead to 5-3. While James Wood’s 434-foot blast and Cade Cavalli’s solid outing highlighted the Nationals' efforts, it was the Yankees' late-game offense that ultimately secured the victory, proving their favored status.
