Cleveland Guardians vs Toronto Blue Jays — Recap

📰Game Recap

The Cleveland Guardians built an early lead with a five-run first inning, then had to withstand a persistent comeback attempt from the Toronto Blue Jays, ultimately securing an 8-6 victory. Angel Martinez was instrumental for Cleveland, launching two home runs including a crucial two-run blast to help maintain the lead.

The Guardians wasted no time establishing control, with Schneemann hitting a leadoff homer in the first inning. Following a two-run double by Valera, Martinez launched his first long ball, a two-run shot, capping a five-run top of the first. Toronto immediately began to chip away at the deficit in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI groundout from Guerrero Jr. and a solo homer by Sánchez. Okamoto added another solo shot in the second inning, drawing the Blue Jays closer.

Despite Toronto's efforts to narrow the gap, Martinez's second two-run blast in the third inning extended Cleveland's advantage to 7-3. This proved critical as the Blue Jays continued to find ways to score against Guardians pitcher Gavin Williams, who ultimately allowed six earned runs over six innings. Clement's RBI double in the fifth brought Toronto within three runs, and Giménez's two-run double in the sixth again reduced the deficit to just two, but Cleveland's early cushion, punctuated by Martinez's power, was enough to maintain the lead.

The Guardians' explosive start, highlighted by Angel Martinez's pair of two-run home runs, provided just enough offense to outlast the Blue Jays' persistent comeback efforts. Their early power surge proved insurmountable for Toronto, who chipped away but could never fully erase the initial deficit. Cleveland improved to 61-65, while Toronto fell to 61-66.
