St. Louis Cardinals vs San Diego Padres — Recap

📰Game Recap

San Diego mounted a dramatic late-game comeback, scoring three unanswered runs in the final two innings to secure a walk-off victory over St. Louis. After being held scoreless for eight frames, the Padres rallied to tie the game in the ninth and then clinched the win in extra innings, overcoming a strong start from Cardinals pitching.

The Cardinals initially took the lead in the fourth inning when Jordan Walker launched a 425-foot home run to left field, scoring Burleson. This two-run shot stood as the game's only scoring until the bottom of the ninth, largely thanks to St. Louis starter Kyle Leahy, who delivered five shutout innings, striking out five batters while yielding no earned runs. However, the Padres refused to be shut down, waiting until their final regulation out to ignite their rally.

The turning point arrived in the bottom of the ninth when Castellanos connected for a 389-foot homer to left-center, scoring Bogaerts and tying the game at 2-2, sending it to extra innings. The Padres then completed their surge in the tenth. With Laureano starting on second base due to extra-innings rules, Machado hit a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Laureano to cross the plate and seal the hard-fought win.

Ultimately, San Diego's resilience and clutch hitting in the game's waning moments proved decisive, nullifying the Cardinals' early lead and strong pitching performance. The Padres now stand at 68-59, while the Cardinals fall to 64-63.
