Game Recap
The Baltimore Orioles erupted for five runs in the 12th inning, highlighted by a grand slam, to defeat the Kansas City Royals in a tightly contested affair that stretched deep into extra frames. After nine innings of a pitching duel, the Oriolesβ offense finally broke through to secure the victory.
Kansas City had initially taken the lead in the second inning when Caglianone launched a solo home run to center field, a lead they maintained for much of the game. That advantage was largely preserved by Seth Lugo, who delivered a dominant performance for the Royals, throwing seven shutout innings while striking out seven. Baltimore finally tied the game in the top of the ninth on a Basallo single that scored Beavers, sending the game into extra innings. Both teams traded runs in the 11th, with Beavers again putting the Orioles ahead before Witt Jr. promptly tied it for Kansas City.
The decisive moment arrived in the top of the 12th. After Basallo singled to left, driving in Mayo to give Baltimore a narrow lead, Leody Taveras stepped to the plate and crushed a 419-foot grand slam to center field, scoring Basallo, Jackson, and Wilson, and breaking the game open with a five-run outburst. Despite a three-run double by Loftin in the bottom of the frame that scored Pasquantino, Thomas, and Perez, the Royals could not overcome the substantial deficit created by Taverasβs heroics.
Baltimoreβs powerful extra-inning surge ultimately proved decisive, showcasing their ability to break through after a tightly contested affair dominated by pitching for most of the regulation. Their late-game offense ultimately secured the road victory. The Orioles now stand at 62-63, while the Royals fall to 51-75.
