Game Recap
The St. Louis Cardinals clawed back from an early three-run deficit against the Chicago Cubs, ultimately securing a narrow victory at home. St. Louis responded immediately after Chicago's first-inning outburst, then slowly built a lead through the middle innings that proved resilient enough to withstand a late Cubs rally.
Chicago quickly took command when Happ launched a three-run homer to right center in the top of the first, driving in Busch and Bregman. However, Nelson Velazquez answered swiftly in the bottom of the frame, tying the game with a three-run blast of his own that scored Herrera and Walker. The Cubs temporarily reclaimed the lead in the second inning on a Busch single that brought home Swanson. The see-saw battle continued into the fourth when Saggese evened the score again with a solo shot, and Herrera followed in the fifth with another solo homer to give the Cardinals their first lead of the contest. FermΓn later singled in Velazquez in the eighth, adding an insurance run before a ninth-inning Busch groundout plated Crow-Armstrong for Chicago's final tally.
While the Cubs' three-run first inning represented their largest offensive outburst, it was the Cardinals' immediate and persistent counterpunch that ultimately dictated the game's flow. Velazquez's three-run homer in the bottom of the first was critical in neutralizing Chicago's early momentum and preventing a larger deficit. From that point, St. Louis methodically chipped away, with the back-to-back solo home runs from Saggese and Herrera flipping the lead permanently into their favor. Cubs starter Shota Imanaga struggled to contain the Cardinals' offense, allowing five earned runs over 5.1 innings as St. Louis continuously found ways to score after the initial surge.
The Cardinals prevailed by consistently answering Chicago's scoring threats and then maintaining their composure to build a lead, showcasing a balanced offensive approach driven by key power hitting. St. Louis ultimately outlasted the Cubs in a tightly contested affair. The Cardinals improved to 65-61 on the season, while the Cubs fell to 72-54.
