Boston Red Sox vs Cleveland Guardians — Recap

📰Game Recap

Cleveland secured a narrow victory over Boston, capitalizing on a four-run first inning that proved insurmountable despite Boston's subsequent efforts to rally. The Red Sox came within a single run after a three-run fifth inning, but Cleveland's early advantage held.

The Guardians wasted no time in establishing their lead. In the bottom of the first, Hoskins singled to left, bringing home Ramírez. An error by center fielder Rafaela then allowed DeLauter and Hoskins to score on a single by Martínez, extending Cleveland's lead. Bailey capped the inning with a sacrifice fly, scoring Manzardo and putting Cleveland up by four. Boston remained scoreless until the fifth inning, when Marcelo Mayer's single drove in Gasper. Durbin then doubled to plate Kiner-Falefa, followed by Duran's sacrifice fly that scored Mayer, cutting the deficit to one run.

The game's outcome was effectively sealed by Cleveland's four-run outburst in the bottom of the first, an inning that included multiple unearned runs following an error. While Red Sox starter Brayan Bello ultimately settled down to deliver an impressive 7.0 innings with five strikeouts and no earned runs allowed, the damage had already been done. Boston's offense, spearheaded by Mayer's two-hit, one-RBI performance, mounted a significant three-run rally in the fifth. However, they were unable to fully erase the early deficit, leaving the tying run on base.

Ultimately, Cleveland's early lead, fueled by Boston's defensive miscue, provided just enough cushion to withstand the Red Sox's mid-game rally. The Guardians now stand at 61-65, while the Red Sox hold a 66-59 record.
