Game Recap
The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Miami Marlins 5-2, largely thanks to a key offensive breakout in the middle innings and a dominant pitching performance from Brandon Woodruff. After falling behind early, Milwaukee took control of the game with multi-run fifth and sixth innings, establishing a lead that the Marlins could not threaten.
Miami initially took the lead in the second inning when Norby singled to center field, bringing Hicks home. The Brewers answered in the fourth, evening the score at one run apiece on Lockridge's single that scored Rengifo. Milwaukee then seized the lead in the top of the fifth inning, as Brice Turang launched a 402-foot home run to center, scoring Contreras and making it 3-1.
The Brewers extended their lead decisively in the sixth inning, putting up two more runs to gain significant separation. Frelick's fielder's choice groundout scored Mitchell, and later in the frame, Turang delivered another clutch hit, singling to center to drive in Ortiz. These two innings gave Milwaukee a 5-1 advantage. Brandon Woodruff was instrumental in maintaining this lead, allowing just one earned run over seven innings while striking out four, effectively stifling the Marlins' bats through the heart of the game. Miami managed only one more run in the ninth when HernΓ‘ndez's fielder's choice brought Lopez home, but the deficit proved too large to overcome.
Ultimately, the Brewers' ability to generate runs in bunches in the middle innings, coupled with effective pitching from Woodruff, was the difference, allowing them to consistently hold the Marlins at bay. Their victory improved their record to 78-48, while the Marlins fell to 64-62.
