Game Recap
The New York Yankees secured a dramatic comeback victory, scoring two runs in the top of the ninth inning to snatch a 4-3 win from the Kansas City Royals. The late rally erased a one-run deficit, capping a back-and-forth contest.
New York initially took an early lead when Bellinger launched a solo home run in the second inning, followed by an RBI single from Caballero that scored Volpe, making it 2-0. Kansas City quickly responded in the bottom half as Masseyβs sacrifice fly brought home Perez. The score remained 2-1 until Perez evened the game in the sixth with a 422-foot blast to left-center. Witt Jr. then put the Royals ahead in the eighth with a go-ahead solo shot to left.
Despite a strong outing from Royals starter Michael Wacha, who limited the Yankees to two earned runs over seven innings while striking out five, the Kansas City bullpen couldn't hold the lead. After Witt Jr.'s eighth-inning homer gave the Royals a 3-2 advantage, the Yankees rallied in the ninth. Volpe delivered the decisive blow, hitting a single to left that scored both Schuemann and Chisholm Jr., pushing New York ahead for good and securing the comeback win.
The Yankeesβ resilient offense ultimately proved too much for the Royals, who were unable to close out the game after taking a late lead. The visitors capitalized on their final opportunity, demonstrating their ability to win close games on the road. The New York Yankees now stand at 70-55, while the Kansas City Royals fall to 51-75.
