Pittsburgh Pirates vs St. Louis Cardinals — Recap

📰Game Recap

The St. Louis Cardinals emerged victorious in a back-and-forth affair against the Pittsburgh Pirates, sealing a 9-6 win with Ivan Herrera's walk-off three-run home run in the 10th inning. The dramatic extra-inning blast capped a hard-fought contest that saw multiple lead changes, including a late rally by Pittsburgh to force extra innings.

Early in the game, the Cardinals established a lead. Wetherholt launched a two-run homer in the third inning, and Nolan Gorman added another run in the fourth with a double play, putting St. Louis up 3-0. The Pirates then mounted a significant offensive burst in the fifth. After Lowe scored on a Matthew Liberatore wild pitch, Bryan Reynolds blasted a two-run double, followed by a single from Oneil Cruz that brought Reynolds home, giving Pittsburgh a 4-3 advantage. However, the Cardinals quickly reclaimed the lead in the sixth when Gorman hit a two-run home run to make it 5-4. Burleson then added a solo shot for St. Louis in the eighth to make it 6-4.

Pittsburgh's four-run fifth inning, their largest scoring frame of the game, initially marked a pivotal shift, erasing an early deficit and momentarily putting them ahead. But St. Louis's immediate response in the bottom of the sixth, fueled by Gorman's home run, quickly seized back the momentum, illustrating the game's tight competitive nature. Even after the Pirates rallied in the top of the ninth to tie the game at six with runs scored on an Ozuna double play and an Horwitz single, the Cardinals' offense refused to fold. Matthew Liberatore's nine strikeouts over 4.2 innings helped mitigate four earned runs allowed earlier in the game, keeping the Cardinals in striking distance.

In the end, St. Louis's persistent power hitting, culminating in Herrera's dramatic extra-inning blast, allowed them to overcome Pittsburgh's repeated comeback efforts. The St. Louis Cardinals now stand at 65-61, while the Pittsburgh Pirates' record moves to 61-66.
