📰Game Recap

Kansas City secured a hard-fought victory over Seattle, fending off a ninth-inning surge by the Mariners after building a substantial lead midway through the contest. The Royals’ consistent scoring throughout the middle innings proved just enough to hold off a determined comeback effort.

Julio Rodriguez put the Mariners ahead early with a solo home run in the first inning. The Royals responded decisively in the bottom of the fifth, as Salvador Perez’s two-run single and Freddy Jensen’s two-run double quickly erased Seattle’s lead and pushed them ahead by three runs. An inning later, Kyle Isbel’s sacrifice fly extended Kansas City’s advantage. Seattle attempted to close the gap in the seventh with RBI singles from Emerson and Crawford, but Perez answered back with another RBI single in the bottom of the frame, pushing the lead to 6-3. Maikel Garcia then delivered a two-run single in the eighth, further padding the Royals’ lead.

The Royals' offense truly broke the game open with their four-run outburst in the fifth inning, which transformed a one-run deficit into a commanding three-run lead. This pivotal inning, punctuated by clutch hitting from Perez and Jensen, established the margin Kansas City would largely protect for the remainder of the game. Even when the Mariners cut into the lead in the seventh, Kansas City consistently responded with scoring plays of their own, preventing Seattle from truly seizing momentum until the final frame. Seth Lugo contributed to holding the Mariners at bay, allowing three earned runs over 6.1 innings.

Ultimately, the Royals' ability to generate multiple-run innings and consistently answer Seattle's scoring plays proved insurmountable for the Mariners. Despite a valiant three-run rally in the ninth inning that saw Rodriguez, Josh Naylor, and Randy Arozarena each drive in a run, Kansas City had built too large a cushion to be fully overcome. The Royals improved their record to 52-74, while the Mariners fell to 59-67.
