The Chicago Cubs, despite entering the contest as underdogs against the favored Pittsburgh Pirates, secured a narrow 3-2 victory, pushing their record to 59-46 while dropping Pittsburgh to 54-52. It was a tightly contested affair throughout, with Matthew Boyd delivering a standout performance for Chicago, tossing seven innings while allowing just one earned run and striking out four. Pittsburgh broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth when Davis’s infield single brought Ozuna home, giving the Pirates an early 1-0 advantage.

The Cubs quickly responded in the top of the sixth, as Pete Crow-Armstrong launched a 375-foot solo home run to right field, his first of two hits on the day, tying the score at 1-1. The game remained deadlocked into extra innings, where Chicago’s offense finally broke through. Dansby Swanson singled to center in the top of the tenth, scoring Happ and putting the Cubs ahead 2-1, a call that stood after a Pirates challenge was upheld. Seiya Suzuki then drew a walk, allowing Ramirez to score and extending Chicago's lead to 3-1. Pittsburgh managed to plate one run in the bottom of the tenth on a Gonzales groundout that scored Davis, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Cubs from completing the upset.
