Game Recap
The Baltimore Orioles rallied from two separate deficits against the Detroit Tigers, using a three-run third inning and another decisive three-run surge in the fourth to secure a 7-4 victory. Baltimoreβs consistent ability to answer Detroitβs scoring proved to be the difference throughout the contest.
Detroit initially took the lead on McGonigle's solo home run in the first inning. That advantage extended in the third when Lee doubled home Workman, making it 2-0. However, Baltimore quickly erased that lead in the bottom of the third, as Pete Alonso blasted a three-run homer to right field, putting the Orioles ahead 3-2. The Tigers responded immediately in the top of the fourth, first tying the game on McKinstry's fielder's choice, which scored Greene, and then taking a 4-3 lead when Lee singled, scoring Torkelson.
The decisive swing came in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Baltimore quickly reclaimed and extended their lead. Taveras scored on a balk, knotting the game at four runs apiece. Shortly after, Holliday connected for a two-run home run to left, driving in Cowser and giving the Orioles a 6-4 lead they would not relinquish. The rally in the fourth, combined with Alonso's earlier three-run shot, underscored Baltimore's offensive power. Jack Flaherty, Detroit's starter, recorded seven strikeouts but ultimately allowed three earned runs over 3.1 innings before Baltimore's bats came alive. Alonso later added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth, bringing his RBI total to four for the night.
Baltimore's resilience in repeatedly seizing control of the game after falling behind proved to be the key factor in their victory. The Orioles improved to 62-63, while the Tigers fell to 60-65.
