The Colorado Rockies, entering the contest with a 42-67 record, managed to secure a low-scoring 3-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals, who now fall to 46-65 on the season. The Rockies wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as Moniak crossed the plate in the bottom of the first inning on a single to right field by Rumfield, establishing an early 1-0 lead.

Colorado then extended their advantage in the bottom of the fourth inning, benefiting from a costly defensive miscue by Kansas City. Karros scored on a throwing error by Royals second baseman Massey, which also allowed Johnston to advance safely to second base, pushing the score to 2-0. Moments later, Doyle doubled to left field, driving in Johnston to further pad the Rockies' lead to 3-0, putting the Royals in a difficult hole.

The Royals finally broke through in the top of the sixth inning when Carter Jensen launched a towering 424-foot solo home run to right field, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Jensen's blast represented Kansas City's only run and top offensive performance of the day. On the mound for the Royals, Michael Wacha delivered a commendable performance despite the loss, pitching six innings, striking out seven batters, and allowing only one earned run.

However, Jensen's long ball was all the offense Kansas City could muster against the Rockies' pitching staff. The early runs, aided by the crucial error in the fourth, proved to be enough for Colorado to hold on for the 3-1 win. Wacha's efficient outing and Jensen's powerful homer were ultimately not enough to overcome the early deficit created by the Rockies' timely hitting and the Royals' defensive lapse.
