The Cincinnati Reds, entering the game as underdogs with a 51-57 record against the favored 55-55 Pittsburgh Pirates, pulled off a dramatic 8-7 upset victory thanks to a thrilling bottom of the eighth inning. The game was a seesaw battle from the start, with the Pirates striking first in the top of the first when Gonzales singled to center, bringing home Reynolds and Valdez for an early 2-0 lead. The Reds quickly answered in the bottom half of the inning, with Stephenson doubling to score Bleday, followed by Lowe's single that tied the game at two, scoring Stephenson.

The back-and-forth continued into the second and third innings. Mangum put Pittsburgh back in front with a solo home run in the top of the second, making it 3-2. Not to be outdone, Bleday launched a solo shot of his own in the bottom of the third, once again drawing the Reds even. Cincinnati then took its first lead of the game in the fourth, courtesy of a two-run homer from Sal Stewart, scoring De La Cruz and pushing the Reds ahead 5-3. The Pirates managed to chip away in the fifth, a sacrifice fly from Valdez bringing home Lowe to narrow the deficit to 5-4.

The contest reached its "turning point" in the top of the eighth inning as the Pirates mounted a formidable rally. Davis singled to left, scoring Gonzales and tying the game at 5-5. The scoring continued when Mangum singled, bringing home Rodríguez and giving Pittsburgh a 6-5 lead. Lowe then delivered another key hit, singling to center to score Davis, extending the Pirates' advantage to 7-5 and seemingly putting them in control.

However, the Reds were not done, orchestrating their own late-inning heroics. In the bottom of the eighth, Sal Stewart, who had an outstanding performance with 2 hits including a home run, 4 RBI, and 2 runs scored, singled to center, driving in both Marte and McLain to tie the game at 7-7. The dramatic inning culminated when Lowe grounded into a fielder's choice to third, allowing Stewart to score the game-winning run on an error by the second baseman, securing the 8-7 victory for Cincinnati. Reds starter Hunter Greene pitched 6.0 innings, striking out 4 while allowing 4 earned runs, keeping his team in a position to win a game that saw both teams fight until the very last out.
