The Kansas City Royals, entering play with a 45-62 record and heavily favored by the market to lose to the 50-56 Detroit Tigers, pulled off an unexpected upset, winning 5-4. The Royals wasted no time establishing an early lead, with Thomas homering to right field in the top of the first inning to put Kansas City up 1-0. They quickly extended their advantage later in the frame when Loftin scored on a fielding error by Tigers second baseman Lee, making it a 2-0 game before Detroit even had a chance to bat.

Kansas City continued to build on their lead in the fourth inning, as Maile doubled to left field, bringing Tolbert home and stretching the Royals' advantage to 3-0. However, the game's turning point arrived in the bottom of the fifth. The Tigers erupted for four runs, beginning when Greene grounded into a fielder's choice, allowing Keith and Lee to score, though an error by Royals second baseman Velazquez added to the drama. Just moments later, Dingler singled to center, scoring both McGonigle and Greene, completing the four-run rally and putting Detroit ahead 4-3. Despite the late surge against them, Tigers starter Framber Valdez put in a solid performance, pitching 5.0 innings while striking out four and allowing only two earned runs.

The Royals, not to be outdone, mounted their own comeback in the top of the eighth inning. Michael Massey delivered the decisive blow, launching a 399-foot home run to right field that also brought Collins home. This two-run shot pushed Kansas City back in front, 5-4. Massey's timely blast was the top batting performance of the game, as he finished with a home run, two RBI, and a run scored, ultimately securing the come-from-behind victory for the underdog Royals.
