The Detroit Tigers pulled off an impressive upset against the favored Chicago Cubs, securing an 8-6 victory on the road. Despite their 50-56 record coming into the contest against the 59-46 Cubs, Detroit wasted no time making a statement in what proved to be the game's turning point. In the top of the first inning, Riley Greene launched a 408-foot three-run homer to right center, scoring Spencer Torkelson and Colt Keith. Dillon Dingler followed immediately with a 396-foot solo shot to center, quickly staking the Tigers to a 4-0 lead against Cubs starter Jameson Taillon, who would ultimately surrender all four of his earned runs in just 4.1 innings pitched.

The Cubs began to chip away at the deficit in the bottom of the third. Seiya Suzuki crushed a 419-foot two-run homer to center, bringing home Miguel Amaya. Matt Mervis then added a 401-foot solo homer to center himself, narrowing Detroit's lead to a precarious 4-3. The game remained a tense, one-run affair until the eighth inning, when Dingler once again delivered for the Tigers, hitting his second homer of the day, a 382-foot shot to left center, extending Detroit's lead to 5-3 and setting the stage for late-game drama.

That drama unfolded quickly in the bottom of the eighth. Ian Happ responded for the Cubs with a massive 432-foot two-run homer to right center, scoring Alex Bregman and tying the game at 5-5. With the score deadlocked after nine, the contest headed to extra innings. In the top of the tenth, the Tigers capitalized on the runner on second, as Dingler recorded his fourth hit of the game with an infield single to shortstop, allowing Parker Lee to score and Greene to advance to second. Torkelson then came through with a single to center, scoring both Dingler and Greene to put the Tigers up 8-5.

The Cubs made one final push in the bottom of the tenth. Alex Bregman scored on a grounder by Nick Ramirez, bringing the score to 8-6, but that would be as close as Chicago would get. Dingler's outstanding performance, going 4-for-5 with two home runs, three RBI, and three runs scored, was instrumental in the Tigers' ability to close out the upset victory against the Cubs.
