The Orioles struck first in the opening frame, taking a 1-0 lead when O'Neill hit a ground rule double that brought Henderson home. However, Boston quickly erased the deficit in the second inning on a sacrifice fly from Duran, tying the game as Contreras crossed the plate. The Red Sox then took control in the third, first going ahead 2-1 after Abreu doubled to center, and Rafaela scored on a throwing error by Orioles shortstop Henderson. The back-and-forth drama continued into the seventh inning. Baltimore regained the lead, 5-4, after O'Neill grounded out to second, allowing Ward to score. Yet again, Boston had a response, tying the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh when Rafaela singled to left, scoring Cheng on a crucial throwing error by left fielder Ward. With the game deadlocked, Boston's Durbin stepped up in the bottom of the eighth and crushed a 364-foot home run to left-center, giving the Red Sox a 6-5 lead that would ultimately prove decisive. Orioles starter Shane Baz turned in a solid performance despite the outcome, pitching 6.0 innings, striking out six, and allowing only two earned runs. In a tightly contested battle marked by clutch hitting and costly defensive miscues, the favored Red Sox emerged victorious.
