The favored Atlanta Braves, entering the contest with a strong 62-43 record, held off the San Diego Padres in a tight matchup Wednesday, securing a hard-fought 3-2 victory. Despite a resilient effort from the Padres, the Braves' offense did just enough to protect their home turf and clinch the win.

It was Padres star Manny Machado who broke the scoreless deadlock, launching a 402-foot solo home run to center field in the top of the fourth inning, giving San Diego an early 1-0 lead. Machado was a bright spot for the Padres offense, finishing the night with two hits, including his pivotal blast that accounted for San Diego's first run.

Atlanta quickly responded in the bottom of the fifth. Michael Harris II evened the score with a 341-foot solo shot to right, and moments later, the Braves seized the lead when Kevin Bart's double to left scored David Dubón, pushing the score to 2-1. Ozzie Albies extended Atlanta's advantage in the bottom of the sixth, connecting for a 393-foot home run to left, making it a 3-1 game. Braves starter Bryce Elder turned in a solid outing, pitching six innings and allowing two earned runs while striking out four.

San Diego managed to cut into the deficit in the top of the seventh as Jake France homered to left center, a 397-foot blast that brought the Padres within one run at 3-2. However, despite the late offensive surge, the Padres could not find the equalizer. The Braves, who were favored heading into the matchup, successfully protected their slim lead to close out the game, improving their record to 62-43 and affirming their status in a closely contested battle against the 53-53 Padres.
