Game Recap
The New York Mets overcame an early two-run deficit against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday, methodically chipping away at the lead before securing a 3-2 walk-off victory in the tenth inning. The Metsβ persistent offense eventually broke through despite a strong outing from Detroitβs starting pitcher and an initial spark from the Tigersβ lineup.
Detroit jumped ahead immediately in the first inning when Riley Greene delivered a two-run single to center, bringing home McGonigle and Dingler. New York responded in the second inning, cutting the lead in half when Taylor grounded into a fielder's choice that allowed Vientos to score. The score remained 2-1 in favor of the Tigers until the bottom of the seventh, when Bichette singled to right, scoring Torrens and knotting the game at two runs apiece, ultimately sending the contest into extra innings.
The Tigers' two runs in the opening frame proved to be their only offense of the game, as their early lead, built entirely by Greene, slowly evaporated. Detroit starter Framber Valdez largely contained the Mets, surrendering just two earned runs over 6.2 innings with seven strikeouts. However, New York's ability to capitalize on opportunities across multiple innings, scoring single runs in the second and seventh, negated Valdez's effort and set the stage for their late-game heroics.
Ultimately, the Mets' resilience and timely hitting were the deciding factors. After erasing Detroitβs initial advantage, New York completed their comeback in the tenth inning when Benge singled to center, driving in Ewing for the decisive run. The Mets improved their record to 57-69, while the Tigers dropped to 60-65.
